In the Architecture program, faculty focus on teaching a strong sensitivity
to the needs of people and the environment, and the ability to translate that
into three dimensional form. Looking at how structures work for their intended
users is advocated – rather than teaching any particular style of design.
Students can study architecture, interior architecture, exhibit design, and
furniture design. As they advance, they address increasingly complex design
issues and learn to create buildings that are structurally sound as well as
aesthetically satisfying. Students who wish to focus on interiors can opt for
the Interior Architecture track, which combines structural study with interior
design.
Classes are taught by practicing professionals and are friendly, informal,
and highly participatory. Field trips to building sites, seminars on leading
design issues, and research on the nature of materials and technologies are
examples of the support activities that are intrinsic to the program.
Graduates of Massachusetts College of Art’s architecture program have
an excellent record in gaining admission to graduate schools and have gone on
to study at MIT, Harvard, University of California/Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania,
and University of Chicago. They have established their own professional practices,
and routinely obtain jobs in some of the finest architectural firms.
