In the Industrial Design program, students focus on solving design problems
and on redesigning products in ways that positively impact a wide range of people.
Students study sketching and rendering, human factors, manufacturing processes,
and build prototypes to test their ideas. Through an intense design process
using research, concept drawing, manufacturing analysis, and material exploration,
students create solutions for a number of consumer products.
Students work toward completion of a major degree project in their senior year.
Projects have included a redesigned walker (taking into account the issues and
needs of elderly people of limited mobility), an innovative stationary bicycle,
exercise and athletic equipment, children’s’ toys, furniture systems,
and a school bus.
All faculty are practicing designers with many contacts in industry and are
members of the Industrial Designers Society of America. Students participate
in internships, design competitions, and product development by partnering with
local manufacturing and consulting firms. The end of the semester review offers
students an excellent opportunity to show their work to professionals in New
England. The college also hosts an exhibition called “Design Massachusetts”
which features the work of numerous award-winning projects designed by our industrial
design alumni.
