The Metals Concentration at MassArt provides a sequential program of experiences which combine direct practice with conceptual problem solving. By exploring the methods and motives behind both traditional and contemporary objects, students cultivate an awareness of their direct connection to the vitality of art in historic and contemporary culture.

The jewelry metals studio and facilities at MassArt are among the best equipped and safest in the country. Instruction in all significant techniques is offered during the course of the program; these include:

  • Jewelry construction in base and precious material
  • Vacuum and centrifugal lost wax casting
  • Vulcanized and silicone mold processes
  • Stone setting
  • Chasing and repoussé
  • Acid etching
  • Large scale raising and forming for sculpture and hollow ware
  • Enameling and patination
  • Electroforming
  • Hydraulic press techniques and die forming
  • 3D modelling and CNC milling
