MassArt’s graduate program in Fine Arts 2D, coordinated
by Professor Roger Tibbetts, provides a concentrated environment
in which painters and printmakers may pursue their work. The creative
centerpiece of the program is a weekly critique session in which
graduate students present projects and then receive feedback from
both faculty and peers. These critique sessions help to sustain
a vital, ongoing dialogue about works-in-progress. Visiting artists,
who meet with graduate students on a biweekly basis, add to the
dialogue by discussing student pieces, visiting student studios,
and participating in informal talks.
In recent years, these participants have included Sean Scully,
Ellen Gallagher, Louise Fishman, Richard Tuttle, Mary Heilman,
Larry Poons, Laura Newman, William Bailey, Julie Heffernan, Tom
Nozkowski, Pat Adams, Joseph Marioni, Lesley Dill, and Andrew
Forge. The students and faculty together select those individuals
who can best contribute to this program. In addition, three separate
lecture series at MassArt further complement this visiting artist
matrix.
The graduate program in Fine Arts 2D supports a wide range of
two-dimensional practices, including painting, printmaking, mixed-media,
conceptually-based, and installation projects.
