Mass Art is one of the few schools in the country where students
pursue a curriculum of personal film/videomaking. We encourage
students to experiment, to develop a personal vision, and to reach a
critical understanding of film/video history and the philosophy behind
existing genres.
Film/Video students are provided with a broad and solid
foundation in the basics of time-based media art making. The
curriculum is production based and situated in a studio art context.
The Facilities include plenty of workspace and a wide array of film,
video, and audio equipment for checkout; students gain the skills and
confidence to refine their own personal direction in time-based media.
Students are offered a unique opportunity at Mass Art because of their
immediate immersion in film and video production. In the sophomore and
junior years, students learn Super 8 Film, 16 mm Film, Analog Video,
Digital Video, High Definition Video, Sound Design and Non-Linear
Editing. Class time is used for technical instruction, production and
critique. In addition, within all of the studio classes students view
historical and contemporary video tapes, films, and documentation of
multimedia art works. They develop a vocabulary with which to discuss
their own productions and critique each other's work. In several
classes, students form crews to work on each other's projects. By
shifting roles, they work as a team and solve problems creatively as a
group. The Film/Video major culminates in independent, senior-year thesis projects.
The school's longstanding MassArt Film Society provides weekly
screenings of a wide range of films and videos, often with the artist
present for discussion.
An internationally recognized group of film and videomakers teach in
the Film/Video department. Current Faculty includes: Saul Levine, a filmmaker
who also works in digital video; Ericka Beckman, a filmmaker who also
works with digital media; Gretchen Skogerson, a video and interactive
installation artist; Madeleine Gallagher, a video installation artist
and Robert Patton-Spruill, an independent feature filmmaker who
started his own company, Film Shack.
